Brandon is stuck in the water slide

We get some California waves to open episode two – AND THE MOST UNBELIEVABLE “IN THE CURL” OF BRANDON IN THE WAVE.

Oh wait.. just a dream sequence.

Coincidence or…. Brenda and Brandon share a bathroom, ala Brady Bunch.

933 Hillcrest Drive, Beverly Hills 90210 – if you want to mail anything to the Walsh family… which happens to be a new house from the pilot.

Brenda resembles a rectangle, I think she has eaten too many pop tarts. Stick to the kiwi, 12 calories a slice.

Cast has stepped down off their uber-preppy style, maybe to be more relatable.

Scott has swapped his James Worthy cartoon tshirt for a Magic Johnson cartoon tshirt, I have to ask if this loser just showed up everyday and was put on the show in whatever he was wearing. What’s he up to now?

From Wikipedia: Douglas Emerson “He gave up acting to join the military forces. In 2002, he was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to Holloman AFB in New Mexico.
Emerson now works for a company called Home Alliance, for which he manages properties that are rent-to-own.”

EW.

Dylan McKay appears on the scene to defend Scott from “jocks” – still a relevant cultural nuance of the day, before the jock – nerd alliance against freakz in the mid 90s. His James Dean vibe is laughably imposed on the audience. It just shows how wack the rest of the cast was at this point, that this dude rolls in and takes over. His condescending attitude smokes everyone else, particularly Brandon, who will forever be in his footsteps from this point on. So to summarize –

Dylan – Alpha
Brandon – Beta

Brenda used to be alot better looking in my mind

Brenda doesn’t look as good as she did when I was twelve. Now she looks pudgy and she has British teeth. But I do like that she is kind of a slut.

Episode 2. Initial impressions.

Different title screen, different intro, different house. Some upgrades(?) since the pilot. I’m ok with this.

Everyone looks about three years older and I’d be curious to find out how long that pilot was sitting on the shelf before Fox picked it up.

Dylan comes on with some real tough guy Fonz sort of vibe as an introduction.

Brandon’s hair is taken down a couple notches and I’m disappointed by it. Come correct, Brandon.

Were they in contract negotiations with Jim Walsh during this episode? He's "in Chicago."

Yo, can we get Kelly an upper lip?

Love the surfers wearing bahas and jamz. Good look.

Looking California, Feeling Minnesota

EPISODE 1 RECAP
Brandon and Andrea have the relationship dynamics and aesthetic of two 38 year olds with fat ugly children. Watching their interaction is like going to a flea market and seeing a couple argue over cavarecci’s and faux leather products while they hold a child on a leash. It’s terrible. I can’t believe this is a plot thread that was held onto for so long.

Everyone wears belts, big hideous ones that are made visually evident to the audience because no t-shirt remains untucked. This fashion, moreso than the music drivel, would be my main inspiration for the alt. culture / youth angst explosion of the early nineties. Kudos to 90210 for not really kowtowing to the grunge movement… they instead opted to stay mired in tucked in shirts.

The pilot tries, and FAILS, to have some sort of faculty cast, both interacting amongst each other as well as the main cast. This is a terrible failing that aches of eighties intrigue, and just falls flat on its face here.

Kelly Taylor has a different mom, and thankfully they upgraded their Jackie before making it to the real series. She also apparently lives in a hotel room or guest room. Or has the sensibilites of a tasteless 58 yr. old woman.

No Dylan McKay – obviously sensing the lack of a "street level" character. Brandon is too smooth, and they need some sort of conflict character. Maybe the only influx of 90’s moodiness.

Was there enough from this pilot to make me want to watch a season? No. To be honest, I feel the series doesn’t begin to make waves until season three, but even for the early seasons, the pilot feels weak. No Dylan, just hints of Kelly’s tortured soul, too much Brenda, and does anyone like Andrea Zuckerman? 4/4 vote that she doesn’t warrant an umbrella in a monsoon. SHE’S THAT BAD AARON SPELLING.

Since Blogger is shitting the bed we have some time to deliberate further so I’ll give a 15 words or less description on the characters so far.

David – annoying.
Scott – can’t wait til he shoots himself. (Did viewers get to vote for that?)
Donna – her best performance.
Steve – believably unlikeable.
Brandon – leers at anything with a vagina or vagina-like thing.
Brenda – sexual tension that would make leia and luke feel weird.
Andrea – see the latter of “things Brandon would leer at”
Kelly – winner in a batch of losers.

Episode 1. Final thoughts.

I sort of anticipated a real dearth of ethnic diversity on this program, but I was wrong. While there are no black students aside from the ones dancing in the commons during the title screen and the dude from PCU, there is however an African American principal.

Maryanne, Brandon's new squeeze, is seemingly Latin American but I can't be sure.

At any rate, I wasn't giving this program enough credit. They tried to make it multi-culti and 90's, which is admirable I guess. Dude from Amistad plays a bouncer.

I wasn't feeling Maryanne at first, but by the time she's in the jacuzzi gettin' it on with Brandon, she's looking pretty good. Actually real good. These are some pouty lips over here. She was not benefiting from that Pump Up The Volume getup they had her in, but strip her down to a bra top and she's got it going on.

Some adult themes in this episode. Both the Walsh's are pretty green on the sex thing. Both are given real hot opportunities to bone out practical strangers here and pass on it. You are on the liberal west coast over here, Walsh's. Get with it. When in Rome, nerds.

Some really hokey pilot episode nonsense going on here. Who is this confused woman playing Kelly's mom? Also, what's up with real effort to make the school staff major characters? The Revolting Blob has more screen time than half the kids.

I'm feeling good about this challenge. This was the longest pilot episode in the history of television. Another 11 hours to go.

Brandon Brandon Brandon

So far, Brandon has cultivated a relationship with Marianne, a very attractive girl who resembles a sexier Phoebe Cates. Patrick K. rescinds his previous assertion of her questionably having a penis.

But the putz has gacked it up by a vague comment that was misconstrued by his fellow student athletes. Poor Mary Ann, she presents the ultimate contradiction, a party girl who has no friends.

The gauntlet has been thrown down - if we were just watching this pilot, on october 4th, is there enough that would warrant a continued interest? -- To be answered in the post episode summary.

Episode 1. yet more thoughts.

Steve with the white shorts and blazer! This dude is a fucking monster! A pussy crushing monster! You can't stop him. I would never go anyplace with this dude because he'd pick up ALL the girls and would be having a sick orgy while I stood outside the alley holding my dick. I would, however, have this dude over to play video games or some shit. He's awesome.

Brandon ends up slow dancing with a 40 year old transsexual in a gazebo. I can tell she's going to be a reoccurring character because saxophone jazz played when she said "call me anytime" to Brandon.

Steve! Drunk Steve is fucking awesome. He looks like the biggest asshole on the planet went to the Jersey shore and got a caricature of himself done on the boardwalk and then animated it for use on television. It takes five dudes to restrain him from driving drunk! This dude is a party beast!
